Happy July everyone! I want to start by apologizing for slacking on my end with posting the Monthly Challenge here…. sometimes I forget that not everyone is on Youtube, Facebook, or Instagram so I am sorry if you only subscribe to this blog and have missed June’s challenge.
The July 2018 art journal challenge is to create:
- a 2 page spread
- using orange,
- something recycled,
- adding ribbon
- and a cut out,
- and including song lyrics.
If you are on Facebook, I hope you’ll share what you create in the Mixed Media Art Journey group. If you are on Instagram, I hope you’ll share what you create with the hash tag #mixedmediaartjourney because it is so fun to see how differently everyone responds to the same set of prompts!
Secondly, here is a slightly edited process video showing you how I make the journals that I’ve probably been oversharing lately.

Next…
I have to give a HUGE thank you to those who have either (A) dropped a thank you in the tip jar, (B) supported me on my journey by shopping with Purdy Creative Things,
I can’t begin to tell you how much your support means to me, but I have to try anyways…
It’s because of your support that I feel I am on “the right path”.
I don’t really share much about who I am, vs. what I’m working on, but I’m a single mom to 2 incredible boys– 10 & 11. I’ve also been unable to get a “normal job” because one of my children has special needs. So for 11 years, I’ve worked as a self employed copywriter/webmaster because it allows me to work from home, with flexible hours, and put my kids first. Unfortunately, that freelance life can be a financial rollercoaster ride and to top it off, I’ve hit a dead end with that path I’ve spent the last decade on.
Yet it’s because of you and your support that for the first time in 2 years I feel like this “next chapter” is the right one!
Journaling and art have always helped me cope with all that stress, and that’s what inspired me to start Purdy Creative Things. In just a matter of months I have gone from “testing the water” with an Etsy shop to building up a sizable inventory and now setting up at local vendor shows. I’ve tasted the “work” side of this, and still love it! I appreciate every single sale, especially when I can “sell” less and do more. (Perhaps this is where I finally hit that dead end as a freelancer?)
Yet going back a few steps…
it was the Mixed Media Art Journey community that motivated me to give it a shot. When I started this community, I simply envisioned a place where artists of all interests, skills, and experience levels can all help each other through our own individual journeys.
Whether you’re here to learn new art techniques, to share the progress of your own journey, to help others, or even just to admire others’ work… thank you for being a part of us.
I am giving an extra special thank you for those who have dropped a thank you in the tip jar, because it does take time and effort to keep things running smoothly.
Yet I don’t want this to exclude anyone because I also want to thank ALL of you, because it’s not “my group”, it’s our group so thank you for simply participating and making our group such an awesome place to be!
